How I Teach Music"Teach music and singing at school in such a way that it is not a torture but a joy for the pupil; instill a thirst for finer music in him, a thirst which will last for a lifetime." Zoltán Kodály

Currently, all students come to music two times per week for 30 minutes. During that time period, all students participate in many types of activities:
1. Singing alone and with others 2. Performing on instruments alone and with others 3. Reading and writing music in various formats 4. Improvising and creating new material 5. Listening to masterworks 6. Moving to music and playing musical games 7. Performing music in multiple parts 8. Discovering historical and social context of musical pieces Every child can be successful in music class. Concepts are age appropriate and taught with child-centered activities. Students discover musical elements through a Preparation-Presentation-Practice model. First, they are performing music and using the elements before it is brought to their attention (Preparation). The teacher then leads the students through a process of discovering the new element (Presentation). After the element is known, the students practice and apply the element in various musical situations (Practice). |
